Training restaurant workers to reverse overdoses
The tables set up near the entrance of the Big Night Live concert venue looked like a typical merch spread. But instead of band T-shirts and buttons, there were plastic models of human noses and a handful of naloxone nasal sprays.
This unusual display was part of a medical training for bar and restaurant workers - who are often the first to encounter people experiencing a drug overdose. Led by public health and medical professionals, a crowd of servers, bartenders, and security staff practiced administering naloxone, a medicine that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose.

One woman’s battle to obtain life-saving methadone

Every morning, Rebecca Smith, nursing a surgically repaired knee, carefully walks down the hallway of her brutalist brick apartment building, takes the elevator one floor to the lobby, and negotiates the sharply angled driveway outside. There, she waits for an Uber to take her to the last place she wants to go: her methadone clinic. It is her most despised ritual. Smith, 65, is a former medical...
Why fentanyl withdrawal is so unbearable
Переглядів 135 тис.2 місяці тому
Over 2 million Americans have opioid use disorder, according to some estimates. Illicit opioids such as heroin and fentanyl were responsible for over 80,000 U.S. overdose deaths in 2023. Despite the known risks, these drugs are notoriously hard to stop using - due in large part to how debilitating withdrawal can be. “People get trapped in this terrible cycle where they don’t feel normal, they c...

What is in utero gene editing?
Переглядів 1,5 тис.2 місяці тому
Recently approved gene therapies offer patients one-time, potentially curative treatments for genetic diseases such as sickle cell anemia and beta thalassemia. But “one-time” miracle solutions can often be multi-month affairs, require millions of dollars, and cause painful side effects. What if that doesn’t have to be the case? In utero gene editing, or prenatal somatic cell genome editing, env...

I'm not a native english speaker, please forgive my english. I threw my back pain pills away after a couple of months because I always needed more after a week, AND they weren't efficient at controlling my back pain. I never ever felt that bad in my life, I got physically and psychologically ill, and it lasted a week. I was home alone, it was crazy. I don't want to feel that way ever again. If hell exist, that was it. My doctor gave me another type of medication, hydromorphone contin, and it's efficient, and I never felt the need to take more, as opposed to oxycodone, the first medication he prescribed me. He don't give oxycodone to anyone since then. He said he think they made it that way so the patients will always need more after a short amount of time.

For me it WAS like having flu for two weeks but I'm a chronic pain patient who never got high on morphine family opioids or fentanyl in 17 years at a pain management clinic the last 11 of which was on a transdermal fentanyl patch. I had no diarrhea. In fact after 17 years of constipation my stool quickly returned to normal. I did have sweats, chills, lacrimation, rhinorrhea, yawning, restless leg, insomnia and of course much higher pain levels. I required prescription ambien for the first 12 days to sleep. This all happened because the opioid crisis forced my pain clinic to go out of business. I blame opioid abusers and their litigious money grubbing for this. I know addiction is a disease and I wish everyone the best but they collectively destroyed my ability to get the only relief my lifetime nerve damaged torture chamber body has ever had. Thanks a bunch.

I’m clean for 1 year and almost 6 months, I was addicted to Morphine, then methadone, after a rehab I’m feel free. But sometimes I think in opioids. I won’t use again, but sometimes I have to admit that I think that.

Methadone has made it worse. It cleaned me up. Stopped the stealing but now the withdrawl timeline is 2 weeks where the junk was only 4 days of hell. Methadone is an impossible kick. 4 days of hell is a easy kick. 14 days of no slepp is madness

I had been on a heavy regimen of Vicodin after leg surgeries and got no pleasure from it then and on the second surgery actually had a bad reaction lol. Many years later I took some and did get the warm euphoric feeling. I took them a few more times and then got no effect from them lol. I feel lucky considering how many get addicted to them. I had that problem with alcohol and quit drinking 24 years ago.

I have had a severely painful chronic health condition for decades - with the changes to opiate Rx'ing I was forced to go to a pain clinic in 2018. I see a nurse practitioner for medication and an anesthesiologist for procedures. One day after being tired of the scrutiny associated with receiving opiates I inquired what exactly is the protocol for people who just wanted to stop their opiates without titration? I've tried it myself on my own many times and it was like walking through hell with the added discomfort of judgement from my husband while experiencing the worst of the symptoms - she said, "nothing". Huh. Alrighty then.

I developed a very "mild" dependence on opioids by way of poppy seed tea, and so had a "mild" withdrawal when I quit, but even then, it's more than just a very bad flu, mild or severe. There's something utterly miserable and desperate about withdrawal that you cannot understand unless you've subjectively experienced it. It's just this feeling of utter and complete inner awfulness, where you just want to disappear into a black hole and die & which you know can be instantly cured with one more dose. Bringing you to total despair. Whereas eg Buprenorphine totally prevents that problem. It really is a medicine, not a feel good drug. You do not get high on Bupre, you just function normally. And when the time is right you can calmly taper off. I wish there wasn't this terrible stigma around opioids. The stigma causes so much unnecessary suffering.

I did dope for about 15 years from 19 to 34 …. At my peak an 8 ball of raw H would last me around 1 full day plus I’d have one saved for the am then I’d be out again & back at zero. And I quit 8 years & 2 months ago. I believed I was incurable and that no one else was as f’d up as me. Now 8 years later I own my own decent vehicle, my own place, got my teeth fixed, have good credit, and have better relationships with my loved ones than any other time in my life. That’s just to name a few things off the list. To anyone out there caught up in it… If I can make it out, anyone can. It really is possible if you want it for real .😊

Long story edited. I fell, ended up having back surgery. After being on Fentynal for 15 years, I quit 'cold turkey'. It was only by the grace of God that I had restless legs for 2 nights only and never felt withdrawals, cravings or the need to go back to this medication. My pain specialist says it takes 3 months approximately for the brain to return to normal. God can do anything. This was my personal experience.
